There was an end of term feel in the air as the riders warmed up for the 106th Brussels Cycling Classic. This was officially the end of the Flanders Classics series of racing. The closure of the Spring Classics for 2026.

A spectacular setting for the start of the race on the edge of the Parc du Cinquantenaire, in front of the Cinquantenaire Arch. In it’s heyday it was one of the greatest races in Europe - Paris - Brussels. While now it is sometimes dismissed as being a ‘best of’ other races, this hardly seems fair for a race with such historic roots.

Yes, there are nods to others in the suite of Spring Classics, most notably the Muur van Geraardsbergen, Bosberg combination from Omloop Nieuwsblad. There’s also plenty of itself about the race. Congoberg, the third climb of the closing loop of hills. A narrow road with high grasses masking ditches lining it. The summit commanding views of the rolling Belgian countryside.

The race breakaway still had a reasonable lead coming into the first passage of this climb. The peloton allowing them to stay out front until after the second passage of the Muur.

With the race ridden at a frenetic pace, their lead was easily diminished before they reached the outskirts of Brussels. Dragged back by the time of the final sprint, the victory went to Jordi Meeus the on-form sprinter in the race.
